The "Digital Production and NC Technology" group at the Chair of Machine Tools, held by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Brecher, focuses on the integrative connection of real and digital systems along the product development process. Through the systematic aggregation, analysis, and interpretation of planning, process, and inspection data, we create transparency in complex manufacturing environments. Using data science and artificial intelligence, we identify optimization potential and develop models for the production of tomorrow. In the research project PosCompTFW, we are developing an AI-based position compensation for additive manufacturing processes. When large components are built up layer by layer, geometric deviations occur that reduce component quality and are currently offset by high safety factors and extra material. Our goal is to detect these deviations during the process using modern measurement technology and to correct them through data-driven control directly in the machine controller. To do this, we combine machine learning methods with classical control engineering and a digital twin of the process. Finally, the approach will be tested on a real manufacturing system. To strengthen our team, we are looking for motivated students who want to combine theory and practice in exciting projects. We offer our student assistants:

Interesting tasks at the intersection of artificial intelligence, control engineering, and production technology

Active participation in a research project with industrial relevance

Hands-on work with real manufacturing systems and modern measurement systems

Opportunities to write a scientific thesis within the project

Flexible working hours

About us

RWTH is proud to be certified as a family-friendly university.
