Summary

Research Associate (m/f/d) Institute for Electrical Power and Energy Technology Remuneration EG 13 TV-L ID 27226WE6 Start of employment January 1st, 2027 Application deadline November 11th, 2026 Scope fulltime, fixed term until April 30th, 2028 The Institute of Electrical Power and Energy Technology (ieet) at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) conducts research and teaching in electrical energy systems. Our research covers the modelling, planning, operation, control, and stability analysis of electrical power systems, including systems with renewable and power-electronic-based components. Further areas include multi-energy system modelling, sector-coupled energy systems, and the modelling, control, and operation of onboard energy systems for aircraft and ships. We also apply methods from control engineering, information and communication technologies, optimization, and artificial intelligence to electrical energy systems. The KOVER research project investigates decentralized and self-organized coordination in low-voltage distribution grids. Its aim is to enable customers to coordinate their energy consumption with neighbouring customers without access to information on the overall grid state or a central coordination mechanism. Based on locally available information, relevant grid conditions are estimated and local operation is adapted to avoid constraints such as congestion and voltage violations. YOUR TASKS • Research on the modelling, simulation, and operation of low-voltage distribution grids within the research project • Development and implementation of methods for decentralized and self-organized coordination of energy consumption based on local smart meter data • Application of artificial intelligence methods for grid-state estimation and coordination of distributed energy resources • Analysis of cyber resilience as well as validation of the developed methods using simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experiments • Support of teaching activities at ieet and supervision of student projects YOUR PROFILE Requirements • Completed scientific university studies (masters degree or equivalent), in particular in the subject Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Electrical Power Engineering, Energy Engineering, Control Engineering or a closely related field Desired knowledge and personal skills • Good knowledge of electrical power systems and experience in power-system modelling and simulation • Proficiency in programming, preferably with Python and MATLAB/Simulink/OPAL • Familiarity or experience with artificial intelligence and its applications in electrical energy systems • Modeling or implementation of distribution-grid operation, grid-state estimation, cyber resilience evaluation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing • Strong communication skills in German and English (B2/C1), combined with an independent, well-structured approach to work and enthusiasm for contributing to research and teaching OUR OFFER • A job in an interesting, friendly and appreciative working environment • Possibility of mobile working • Flexible and family-friendly working conditions • 30 day vacation per year • Opportunity to obtain academic qualifications in the form of a doctorate/opportunity for further academic qualification At the heart of TU Hamburg’s research, teaching and transfer of technology is the guiding principle of developing technology for people. The TU Hamburg sees itself in this context as a family-friendly and sustainable university with high performance and quality standards that strives for excellence in all its research fields. Interdisciplinarity, innovation, regionality and internationality are binding principles in our actions. With currently around 8.000 students, 110 professors and 1.650 employees, the TU Hamburg is characterised by short decision-making processes and close cooperation between the board, the institutes, the deans of studies, the research areas and the administration. We identify ourselves with a modern leadership culture and cultivate appreciative interaction. Note regarding the Standard Enquiry under Section 34a of the Hamburg Security Clearance Act: The department will submit an enquiry to the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution regarding any information it holds on the person selected in the recruitment process, provided that the legal requirements are met (information on the Standard Inquiry and data protection notices). For further information please contact Prof. Christian Becker, Tel.-Nr. +49 40 30601 3113, Email: c.becker@tuhh.de. We value diversity, therefore all applications are welcome, regardless of gender, gender identity, ethnic origin, nationality, age, religion and belief, disability, sexual orientation and identity or social background. The TU Hamburg stands for equal opportunities as well as appreciative and respectful cooperation. Notice for severely disabled persons and people with equal status. Please send your complete application documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae in table form, proof of completed training and/or university degree, job references or certificates of employment) via the online application system exclusively.
