Kurzbeschreibung

Incorporating Surface Characteristics to Model Roughness- Induced Crack Closure in Fatigue Crack Growth Simulations Masterthesis, Advanced Design Project (ADP) Background Rotating components in turbomachinery such as aircraft engines are exposed to cyclic stresses during their operation. Under these cyclic stresses, cracks can initiate and propagate at production-induced initial defects such as lack-of-fusion in additively manufactured components. The initiation and propagation behaviour of very short cracks is of increased interest, as these can determine a large part of the service life of such components. To describe the behaviour of short cracks, an understanding of crack closure mechanisms is necessary. The aim of this work is to investigate numerically the influence of roughness-induced crack closure (RICC) i.e. contact of the fracture surfaces caused by the misfit of the microscopically rough fracture surfaces. Work packages • Literature research on surface characteristics and their influence on crack growth, crack closure (especially RICC) and methods to include surface characteristics in a FE simulation. • Derivation of relevant model parameters from real fracture surfaces. • Integration of the developed methodology into crack growth simulations to assess the influence of different surface conditions. • Documentation and presentation of the results.
