Kurzbeschreibung
Beschreibung Four Experimental Master Thesis Students for Projects on Heat Transfer at the R&D Fluid Dynamic Lab Please Note: Apply directly via the Siemens Energy Careers Portal The Professorship of Thermo-Fluid Dynamics acts as academic supervisor but is not responsible for selection of the candidates. A Snapshot of Your Day As a Master Student, you will join the Fluid Dynamic Lab team. We are offering four positions to experimentally investigate the effects of additively manufactured (AM) induced roughness on heat transfer, pressure loss, and flow fields. In our lab, we have developed and verified four methods suitable for these studies: the Joule Heat Transfer method (JHT), the Joule Heat Transfer Liquid method (JHTh2o), the Surface Roughness Heat Transfer method (SRHT), and the Particle Image Velocimetry method (PIV). The JHT and JHTh2o methods utilize similar experimental approaches to assess the thermal performance of additively manufactured test objects with varying internal geometries. The test object will be insulated and heated with a high current. Following this, the internal geometry will be subjected to air/water flow at a constant temperature and mass flow rate. By measuring temperatures and pressures before and after the test object, as well as the mass flow, we can evaluate the Darcy friction factor and the Nusselt number as functions of the Reynolds number and Prandtl number. StarCCM is employed to calculate heat generation from the high current passing through the test object and the resulting temperature distribution. An external script manages StarCCM, adjusting the friction factor and internal heat transfer coefficient until the energy balance, mass flow, and outlet temperature align with the measured values. The SRHT method focuses on local heat transfer on upscaled AM surfaces, allowing for the study of various surface parameters related to AM roughness. At the start of the test, the test coupons are maintained at a known uniform temperature and subjected to a sudden step change in flow temperature. Time-resolved surface temperature measurements are taken using an IR camera. By assuming local constant values of the heat transfer coefficient over time, the heat equation is solved using an in-house conjugate FEM solver. The PIV rig employs the same upscaled AM surface test coupons as the SRHT method, utilizing a powerful pulsed laser and a high-speed camera to observe the roughness’s effect on the boundary layer velocity profile and its connection to heat transfer in AM geometries. The projects will be conducted at our lab facilities over a duration of 7 months, starting in March 2027. How You’ll Make an Impact The master thesis project is well-structured, and you will have an experienced supervisor. The project plan typically includes the following steps: • Literature review • Test rig preparation for testing • Conducting tests • Analyzing test results • Implementing changes to the test rig, test procedure, or analysis to enhance results • Writing the final report/presentation Throughout the thesis, you will develop skills in dimensional analysis, data acquisition, heat transfer calculations, and mass flow/pressure/temperature measurements. You will also gain basic knowledge in additive manufacturing. An assigned experienced supervisor will support you throughout the entire process. The goal of each diploma thesis is to produce results that may be worthy of publication, with examples of previous student projects available in the Journal of Turbomachinery, ASME Turbo Expo, and the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer (TURBO-14-1171, GT2014-25619, GT2015-42475, GT2017-64143, GT2018-75019, DOI:10.1016/j.ijheatmasstransfer.2024.125532). Voraussetzungen What You Bring Your profile should demonstrate: • Courses in gas fluid dynamics, heat transfer, dimensional similarity, and numerical methods • Knowledge of Matlab/Python • Fluency in English, both spoken and written • Laboratory testing experience is appreciated
